Maundy Thursday is one of the most significant services of the church year, commemorating Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples on the night before His crucifixion. The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin word for “commandment,” referring to Jesus’ new commandment to love one another as He has loved us.
On this holy night, we remember:
- Jesus washing His disciples’ feet, demonstrating humble service
- The institution of Holy Communion, the Lord’s Supper
- Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane
- His betrayal and arrest
This service includes Holy Communion, as we receive the very gifts Jesus gave on that night—His body and blood given for the forgiveness of our sins. The service often concludes with the stripping of the altar, symbolizing Jesus’ abandonment and arrest.
This is a deeply moving service that helps us enter into the reality of Christ’s suffering. Come prepared for a meaningful, contemplative worship experience.
